What to Expect Working Here

What is it like to work here? It’s fantastic. But, to elaborate further, expect to create custom software related to the fields of research, clinical medicine, and education. We are in the business of improving the workflows of our clients, empowering them to advance in their respective fields, and freeing them from paperwork and process bottlenecks.

We develop primarily in Ruby on Rails. We use agile approaches to software development to get usable products to our clients quickly. Meetings are kept to a minimum to allow for focus without unnecessary disturbances. Developers who are interested often have the opportunity to meet with clients. We value collaboration such as pair programming.

Expect to have input regarding what you work on. Find a project particularly alluring? Say something. We make every effort to match projects with interested developers.

But we don’t stop there. Our team has the ability to make all kinds of choices, including company best practices, processes, and protocols. Found a code review process you’d like to try out or a piece of technology you are interested in implementing? Speak up. We are always looking for ways to improve. That’s why our company values are so important to us and why we work so hard to hire only self-motivated, intelligent people with a hunger for knowledge and continual improvement.

We love the culture at SciMed and are always looking for great people to make us even better. If all this sounds like something you’d like to be a part of, let’s talk. Send your resume and code samples to moc.snoitulosdemics@tnemyolpme.

Operations Manager

SciMed Solutions is a locally owned software company based in downtown Durham. Since 1997, we have been developing software solutions for the medical, scientific, and academic communities, and our business continues to grow in all of those areas. Our clients have made a difference in the world in many fields, including vaccine discovery, cancer treatment, energy-efficient building construction, and social change.

Involvement in so many fields means that SciMed employees are continually learning, and this philosophy influences not only our projects but also our methodologies. Over time, our practices have evolved to include new theories, technologies, and standards, and every employee has a voice in how our company adapts.

SciMed looks for smart, friendly, professional, self-motivated, and self-disciplined individuals.

Job Description – Operations Manager

In its simplest form, the role of operations would involve overseeing and designing business operations, improving efficiency, and, at a high level, ensuring that we are effective in meeting customer requirements. At SciMed, however, we also hope that this person will take an active role in coordinating training, ensuring that standard operating procedures are followed, and continuing to push to make sure that great ideas come to fruition. Specific work activities may include the following.

Realms of responsibility include but are not limited to:

People Operations
Recruitment and retention
HR support such as benefits management and onboarding
Policy and procedure management
Employee time entry review and assisting with payroll
Business Operations
Coordinate internal meetings
Standard operating procedures management
Security and audit review
Assist with project management (e.g. testing, scheduling, billing)
Inventing and gathering improvement ideas and metrics across the company
Employee Happiness/Engagement
Team building
Work space logistics
Engagement planning and metrics
Training and Learning
Coordinate employee training

The ideal candidate will be a graduate from a 4-year college or university who feels that he or she can become a uniquely valuable team member. Employees should be able to take tasks/requests from start to finish without frequent supervision and actively identify where areas of improvement lie or where questionable assumptions are being made. Previous work in Agile development and experience in operations management are preferred. The best applicants will bring additional disciplines to the team beyond computer science and software engineering.

Although this posting is for a defined role, responsibilities will not be fixed over time. Working in a dynamic environment like SciMed allows employees to explore a broader set of skills and interests. For instance, if employees have an interest and aptitude in managing client relationships, work in that area will be encouraged. Generally, SciMed is looking for strong candidates who feel comfortable jumping in and helping in many different areas, and who look forward to learn on the job to excel and overcome any challenges that arise. If you are interested in applying to either this position or an open call for employment, please apply here.
